Sink Basket
If you are looking to gain some extra space, or just get a
little better organized, adding a sink basket or two may be one of the most simple, cost effective steps you can
take. One of the most misused areas in our homes may well be the areas under our bathroom and kitchen sinks. For
many, they are often used to keep cleaning supplies, maybe some extra pots and pans, or any number of odds and ends
that don't seem to quite fit in any other area. The clutter stored under the sink may not be items we use every
day, but finding something when we need it can still be a challenge. Getting it organized, being able to see what
we want, and having easy access is the goal. Using baskets to get those things kept under the sinks organized is a
practical, simple process. The first and most obvious step is to get everything separated and decide just what you
will want to keep under your sink and that which may be better placed elsewhere. Throwing out what you will not be
using will probably be the toughest part, but it's such an important step to getting organized, once and for
all.
What might be the simplest step to take, if you decide to go
with storage and organization solution using baskets, is to consider something that will hang on the cabinet door.
For instance, InterDesign has the "Axis Over the Cabinet Waste/Storage Basket." This is made of heavy wire and
coated with a chrome finish. It will hold four-gallon trash bags or make good use for plastic shopping bags. It can
make a convenient place for table scraps or possibly act as your trash can for the kitchen and free up some floor
space. You could also use it to place boxes of kitchen wraps or other items. It is 14" long, 12" wide and 7" deep.
One thing that can be a nuisance is the accumulation of those plastic shopping bags. To keep them organized and
handy to reuse, there is the "Axis Over Cabinet Bag Holder." This is very similar except that there is an opening
in the bottom front to pull the bags out, which are initially inserted by putting them in the top of the
basket.
There is also a long-handled hanging basket, the "Axis Over
Cabinet X2 Basket" which would work really well with keeping taller items like spray cans. Another option is to
simply use some open baskets like the InterDesign "Classico Basket", in three sizes. These are wire baskets, with
handles built-in that could work really well for keeping cleaning supplies separated and ready to carry where
needed in your home. They also have 3 sizes of plastic baskets in several colors, with wire handles, that could be
pulled out when needed and carried away.
The best type of sink basket would probably be those that are
mounted on slides or rails and often installed on the cabinet floor. Some will have multi-levels or tiers. They can
be pulled out so you will not have to crouch down and dig through the cabinet to find something. There are many
alternatives on this theme including a Lazy Susan type design or drawer-like set-ups. Any of these will go a long
way towards cleaning the clutter under your sink.
